Moment Notes · Help

Press when something matters. Find it when you edit.

Moment Notes saves Highlights, Fixes and Ideas alongside your OBS recording. It observes recording status; it never starts or stops a recording or stream, captures a microphone, or changes your video.

Moment Notes 0.1.3.0 for Windows, Stream Deck and OBS Studio on the same PC. Tested on Stream Deck + XL. Other Stream Deck models: declared, not tested.

First recording

  1. Select the Moment Notes profile in Stream Deck. Click Project in the Stream Deck app to open the setup panel.
  2. Enter a project name and a folder on a local drive for your notes. Valid changes save automatically. Wait for Settings saved before continuing.
  3. In OBS, open Tools → WebSocket Server Settings. Enable its server. Enter the same port and password in Moment Notes, wait for the save, then click Connect to OBS.
  4. Wait for Ready for the next recording, then start your recording in OBS. The marking keys show READY.
  5. Press Highlight, Fix or Idea when something matters. A green tick confirms a saved note. Stop recording in OBS when finished, then press Open notes.

Connect before starting each session. Connecting partway through an existing recording cannot establish a reliable take; finish that recording when convenient and start a fresh one.

Your six keys

KeyWhat it does
ProjectOpens the take list for your selected notes folder. Click this key in the Stream Deck app to see setup.
HighlightMarks a keeper.
FixMarks something to correct.
IdeaMarks a thought to revisit.
UndoRemoves the latest remaining note from the current exports. There is no Redo.
Open notesOpens the latest take's notes in your browser and retries its exports.

The Mini profile uses all six keys. The Stream Deck + XL profile uses the top-left three columns of the first two rows; other keys and dials are empty.

To write more, type under Add detail to the last marker in the app's setup panel, then press Add detail. This replaces the latest remaining marker's detail, up to 2,000 characters. It does not edit earlier markers.

Settings and connection

Project name and notes folder can change while OBS is connected but idle. All settings lock during an observed recording or its start/stop transition. Port and password also lock while observation is enabled; click Disconnect before changing them.

Typing settings does not initiate a new connection. Connect to OBS enables observation and automatic reconnect attempts. That preference is saved, so enabled observation can resume when Stream Deck starts again. Disconnect cancels observation, including a pending connection; it never stops OBS. If you disconnect during a take, its recording association becomes unverified.

A blank password box keeps the protected saved password. Enter a replacement to change it, or use Remove password while disconnected. Removing it does not change OBS's password or disable OBS authentication. Wait for the saved confirmation before connecting again. If Windows cannot unlock the credential after an account or PC change, enter it again; do not copy the old protected value into the password box.

Fix a connection problem

For Cannot connect to OBS, check that OBS is running on this PC, its WebSocket server is enabled, and the port/password match. Click Disconnect to cancel retries before editing. Save, then Connect to OBS again. Moment Notes requires OBS WebSocket 5.5 or newer; update OBS if the panel reports an older version.

After an OBS/plugin restart, connection drop or uncertain clock, do not assume the old take is safe for new markers. Existing notes stay available. Wait for OBS to be idle and observation ready, then start a new recording. Failed presses are not replayed later.

If the setup panel itself says Stream Deck disconnected, select another key in the app and select the Moment Notes key again. Unsaved text without a saved confirmation may need to be re-entered.

For OBS response was too slow, that press did not save. Check the visible recording state, then press again when appropriate. Moment Notes does not backdate a retry.

Split recordings

Manual or automatic file splitting makes that take's file offsets unverified. Moment Notes preserves existing notes, marks the take as split and refuses new markers for it. It does not guess which segment contains a moment.

For new markers, stop the recording in OBS when convenient, wait for readiness and start a fresh unsplit take. If using automatic splits, change that option in OBS before your next session. Do not rename or relink segments in the notes as though their offsets had been verified.

Protect and recover your notes

For Could not save the note, that press was not acknowledged as saved. Finish the OBS recording when convenient and disconnect Moment Notes. Check drive free space, that the drive is available, and that your Windows account can write to the chosen folder.

When idle, use Retry note recovery if shown. It retries the latest take in the selected folder; it is not a repair tool for every historical take. A continuing warning must be resolved before new notes can save. Keep a private backup of the affected take before attempting recovery. Do not delete or hand-edit its journal to make the warning disappear.

To continue separately, choose a new empty folder on a local drive while idle. Wait for the save, connect if needed and start a fresh take. The old folder and its notes remain where they were. Selecting a usable new folder does not repair the old one. Network and device paths are unsupported.

For Note saved; export needs retry, the journal saved the note but one or more readable exports could not be refreshed. Fix folder access or free space and press Open notes again. Do not press another marker simply to recreate that saved note.

If saved setup itself cannot load, see the reversible setup reset in Troubleshooting and support. Keep note folders separate from configuration recovery.

Find, share and keep your notes

Each take has a local folder containing its journal, index.html, moments.csv and moments.md. Open notes gives you the browser page and export links. Project lists takes in your selected notes folder. After changing that folder, older takes remain in the previous location.

Times are estimates based on observed start/pause events, not frame-accurate edit points. Check nearby frames in your editor. An interrupted or split take may have no verified recording path. Source video files are never changed.

Exports refresh from the journal. Save a separate copy before editing an export. Undo and Add detail change what exports show; earlier note text remains in the journal. Check project names, text and recording paths before sharing a screenshot or export. Your browser's Print function can make a PDF; there is no separate PDF exporter.
